Preface

The commercial business is very simple when you get right down to it. Show business, like any other business, requires focus, education, and method. While it appears unpredictable and subject to flights of fancy, an actor can greatly increase his chances of success by knowing where he is headed and how to get there. The information contained in this book is intended to provide in-depth and inside knowledge enabling you to make well informed and deliberate choices, instead of haphazardly throwing yourself into the ring and making costly and potentially career-ending mistakes.

This book is a guide to the ever-changing and increasingly competitive business of television commercials. No other resource on the television commercial industry offers as much timely, in-depth information from so many sources. Novice, experienced, and studied actors will find the information presented here indispensable.

I have striven to offer a balanced and informed view of all facets of the commercial industry. Interviews with various leaders in the field have been conducted to help present the fullest picture. These specialists readily shared their knowledge and expertise.

Chapter 12, "Actor to Actor," is written by actors themselves. Those interviewed have achieved varying levels of success and are at divergent points in their careers. While they may or may not be where they want to be vocationally, they are successful as individuals--no small accomplishment in this high-pressure, acutely competitive and ego-damaging industry. When asked the question "What have you done to pull yourself up when you felt that maybe you should try another career?" most asserted that they had never reached that point. When asked to give their impressions of the commercial business as a whole, and/or to impart any wisdom or advice they wished to share with other actors, they freely offered numerous tips to help others avoid the mistakes they had made. These perceptive and thought-provoking insights are reprinted virtually in their entirety.

Chapter 13 pointedly addresses widespread questions. I know from experience that in lecture rooms and classes all over this country the same questions are asked over and over again. The questions in this chapter reflect most actors' concerns.
